Carrownagappul Bog, located just outside the market town of Mountbellew, is Galway’s Living Bog.

Designated as a Special Area of Conservation, it is one of the 12 bogs chosen to be restored under the Living Bog Project. Measuring 850 acres, it contains fine examples of raised bog habitat and is one of the largest examples of remaining and restorable active raised bog in Ireland. Conservation work is currently underway at Carrownagappul.

At our Interpretive Centre, an audio visual presentation will tell the story of raised bogs and their importance to the local community; how they preserved cultural and environmental information which gives valuable insight into our history—many ancient items have been preserved in Ireland’s bogs; and the importance of active raised bogs to the environment today. You will have the opportunity to learn about the unique flora & fauna of our boglands. Afterwards, one of our guides will take you on a tour of Carrownagappul Bog to experience one of Ireland’s largest remaining active raised bogs. Carrownagappul is unique in that it is accessible by a network of roadways, making it ideal for guided walking tours.
